Real art is one of the most powerful forces in the rise of mankind and he who renders it accessible to as many people as possible is a benefactor of humanity. ”

FAQ

What is Expressive Art?

Expressive Art encompasses a wide range of art forms from dancing, singing, painting, photography, music, poetry, writing, drama, or any visual art form.  It is an interdisciplinary field that combines several art forms together with it's primary focus being on self- expression, creativity, expressing feelings and the creative process.  The creative process is intrinsically linked to the healing process therefore expressive arts have the unique ability to provide inner transformation, healing, and growth while bringing freedom, confidence and joy to one's  life.

How do online music lessons work?

They work very similar to studio lessons, while not necessary, it is helpful if you have access to a printer.  After the first few lessons I will recommend students to purchase specific books tailored to their learning style and interests.  During lessons, it is advised to angle your device to the side of the piano so I am able to see most of the keys.  Some students place it above and that works okay too.  I can use Zoom, Google Meets, Skype, or Facetime.  If using Zoom or Google Meets I will email you a recurring link for your lesson.  For younger students and adults upon request, I send out emails with an assignment/practice suggestions until your next lesson.

I have several materials I am able to freely share, but due to copyright laws students are responsible for purchasing their own sheet music and books.
*If using Zoom it will suppress the background noise and I will not be able to hear your piano as it will fade in and out.  To set it correctly there is an original sound for musicians setting.

Do I need a piano? What kind of piano should I buy?

Yes, to make the lessons worthwhile you will need a piano, digital piano, or keyboard to practice on.  I have taught students without a piano before for a few weeks while they were in the process of shopping for one.  This can work temporarily if needed.

Most keyboards will work for beginners.  I would not recommend going smaller than 61 keys.  76 keys and 88 keys are the best choices.
It's best to purchase a keyboard that has weighted keys and touch sensitivity. (Keys can be loud/soft depending on how hard you push them)  If you're buying a digital piano make sure there is a option to add a pedal.  (Even if you are not purchasing a pedal right away it will be helpful for the future)

How often should I practice?

Music being a universal language makes it very unique and applicable across all time and space.  Like learning any language it takes time, repetition, and practice.  While it is ideal to play everyday, this is not always possible.  It is best to practice several times a week for 20-30 minutes/day to easily see consistent progress.  Less time several times a week is better than 1 hour once a week.  For a late beginner with a busy schedule,  I recommend to play the scale of the key signature for the song you are learning up and down with both hands in 1 octave,  then play your song two times in a row.  Next pick one or two songs you already know that you like to play for fun.  This should take no more than 15 minutes. (unless you are working on a harder piece)

What if I'm not creative? I'm not an artist!

I personally believe everyone is creative and everyday we are creating the world around us.  Creativity can be expressed in many ways whether through the arts, science, math, philosophy etc.  The creative arts are special however, in that they can work to heal blocks and reconnect with our intuition, subconscious, and spiritual selves.  They have the ability to provide a tangible path to connect  back to our very essence & true selves.  Of course there are other paths to reach to this state of being, but not all disciplines are able to reach us at that profound level and provide the means for inner transformation, while simultaneously building confidence and creating joy and freedom in one's life.  Everyone's expression is unique and is their own.  When playing music or creating art is done out of love, with passion and joy from a state of non-judgement you will see and feel the benefits.  You can express yourself and have fun!
